Brad Pitt on 'Today': Jennifer Aniston a 'dear friend'

brad-pitt-matt-lauer-2.jpgBecause Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston can't put out a new movie without their tangled relationship history getting dredged up, it will surprise no one to learn that in a new interview with "Today's" Matt Lauer, Pitt again talked about his ex (Aniston).

In a recent Parade magazine interview, Pitt was quoted as saying marriage to Aniston wasn't "interesting." Which, of course, morphed into "Brad Pitt thinks Jennifer Aniston is boring" headlines. According to the latest issue of Us magazine, Aniston demanded an apology.

But, Pitt tells Matt Lauer, that wasn't what he said. Or, at least not what he meant.

"I don't know what was pieced together or put together. All I know is that my point was, the best thing I'd done as a father is be sure that my kids have a good mother," Pitt tells Lauer. "That's all I was, or am, trying to say. It has no reference to the past. And I think it's a shame that I can't say something nice about Angie without Jen being drug in. You know, she doesn't deserve it."

"I don't want them to say anything bad like that about Jen," he adds. "She's a dear friend of mine."

The interview is set to air Thursday (Sept. 22) on NBC.
