'Buffy' star Anthony Head joins 'The Selection' at The CW

Head, who played watcher Rupert Giles on "Buffy" throughout its seven-season run on The WB and UPN, has joined the cast of "The Selection" at The CW, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He'll play King Clarkson, the monarch of the nation depicted in the series and father of Prince Maxon ( Michael Malarkey), who must choose his wife from a group of young women competing for his hand.

The king advises his son to choose a winner based on political considerations, not love. That advice may fall on deaf ears, though, when Maxon meets America Singer ( Yael Grobglas), a working-class girl chosen to be part of the Selection.

Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain -- who, incidentally, worked on "Buffy" spinoff "Angel" for a couple of seasons -- are writing the pilot, which is based on a novel by Kiera Cass.

Head's last TV role in the United States was last season's short-lived NBC comedy "Free Agents." He's also starred on "Merlin" (a U.K. series that airs on Syfy here) and "Little Britain," among others.
