'Captain Planet and the Planeteers' movie in works at Sony because there are no new ideas in the world

captain-planet-and-the-planeteers-movie-adaptation.jpgScreenwriters the world over must've stopped generating new ideas because there is a big-screen adaptation of "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" in the works.

THR reports that Sony Pictures is in final negotiations to pick up the rights to the 1990s environmental cartoon for an adaptation by producers Mark Gordon ("Grey's Anatomy), Don Murphy ("The Transformers") and Susan Montford.

"Captain Planet" told the story of five teens, each from a different continent (North America, Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia and South America), who'd been given powers by Gaia, the earth spirit, in order to protect the planet from polluters. When they weren't strong enough, their powers combined to summon the one and only Captain Planet. (You remember the chant: "Earth! Wind! Water!...")

It's too bad Gordon, Murphy and Montford's powers couldn't combine to create an original movie.

Are you looking forward to a "Captain Planet" movie or has Hollywood finally hit the bottom of the barrel in terms of adaptation material?
