Carey Mulligan could play Hillary Clinton in a film based on the life of the Secretary of State and former First Lady.

The Hollywood Reporter is claiming that Mulligan is producers' first choice to play Clinton in the movie "Rodham," which is being backed by Temple Hill and The Arlook Group. Other names said to be in the mix are Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Chastain and Emma Stone.

Sources close to the production say that both Mulligan and director James Ponsoldt are "eager for it to work," though no decision has been made. Up next, Mulligan is going to have a sit-down conversation with Ponsoldt to discuss the role.

According to THR, Young Il Kim's 2012 Black List script is about "Rodham as a young lawyer on the committee involved in President Richard Nixon's impeachment, and her juggling a diverging career path with her unresolved feelings for future president Bill Clinton."

Meanwhile, the official logline for the project reads, "During the height of the Watergate scandal, rising star Hillary Rodham is the youngest lawyer chosen for the House Judiciary Committee to Impeach Nixon, but she soon finds herself forced to choose between a destined path to the White House and her unresolved feelings for Bill Clinton, her former boyfriend who now teaches law in Arkansas."
