Carrie Underwood to star in 'Sound of Music' production live on NBC
"We're thrilled to be presenting the Broadway version of The Sound of Music live," producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron say in a statement, "and having Carrie Underwood as the star brings it to a new generation who will fall in love with it for the first time as many millions of people already have. It's a particular joy to us as producers to see this amazing artist stretch into new territory with this classic musical."
The producers, who were also involved in the film versions of "Hairspray" and "Chicago," will include well-known songs from "The Sound of Music" movie as well as lesser-known Broadway favorites.
"It isn't our intention to produce a remake of the movie version of 'The Sound of Music' - that would be artistic blasphemy," Zadan says. "What we want to do, instead, is to give audiences a completely fresh experience of this great Tony Award-winning stage musical in the form of a classic television event, combined with the spontaneity of a live performance. And all of the actors will be singing live; there will be no lip-synching to pre-recordings."
