Season 3 of "Castle" didn't just end with the shooting of Beckett ( Stana Katic). Captain Montgomery ( Ruben Santiago-Hudson) also took a bullet in the dramatic finale -- and unlike his subordinate, he won't be making a recovery.

So who's taking his place as the leader of the 12th Precinct and Beckett and Castle's ( Nathan Fillion) boss? As TV Guide was first to report, the job will go to Penny Johnson Jerald.

A television fixture since the early '90s, the 50-year-old actress is probably best known for playing Beverly Barnes on HBO's "The Larry Sanders Show" and the ex-wife to "24" president David Palmer ( Dennis Haysbert).

Jerald will play Victoria "Iron" Gates, a by-the-book, career-minded cop who has little experience actually working in the field. Her desire to move up the chain of command will see her being harsher on the team than Montgomery -- and likely not thinking too fondly of the special Castle/Beckett relationship.

We'll see exactly how that plays out when "Castle" returns to ABC, Monday, Sept. 19, at 10:00 p.m. ET.
