'Celebrity Apprentice' on hold while NBC 'restocks the pond'
"In the celebrity iteration of 'The Apprentice,' we obviously need to know we can cast the show," NBC's head of alternative programming, Paul Telegdy, said Saturday (July 27) at the TCA summer press tour. "That's the bit of the process we're in, which is the restocking of the celebrity pond. ... That's taking some time. So no imminent plans for an announcement."
As for Trump and his frequent and controversial political pronouncements, Telegdy says that's not really a consideration for the show's future.
"He's in the business of creating his own headlines and we're in the business of creating ours," Telegdy says. "Sometimes the two mesh and sometimes they don't. But merrily on his way he goes, and we'll make our decisions around programming 'The Apprentice' based on our consideration of whether it will still rate."
Ratings for "The Celebrity Apprentice" were down about 20 percent last season, but the show still frequently led the 10 p.m. Sunday timeslot in adults 18-49. "That's of value to us in a world where time period wins on NBC aren't always in great supply," Telegdy says.
