Charles Gibson leaving ABC's 'World News' Dec. 18

charles-gibson-abc.jpgIn just over two weeks, Charles Gibson is signing off from the "World News" desk for the last time.

The Associated Press is reporting that Charles Gibson, who has anchored the ABC evening news for three years, is officially leaving the show on Dec. 18. He had announced his retirement in September, having been with ABC News in some capacity for over 30 years.

Diane Sawyer has been announced as Gibson's replacement. Conventional wisdom was that Sawyer would take over after the New Year, but now that Gibson has named a departure date, perhaps we will see her behind the anchor desk sooner.

Now that Katie Couric is at the CBS news desk and Diane Sawyer is soon to be at ABC... move over, Brian Williams. Meredith Vieira's on her way!
