Chelsea Handler and Netflix announce talk show and comedy specials deal
The popular late-night host will be heading to Netflix to create a news show that will debut in early 2016, the network announced Thursday (June 19). The new show will feature Handler's usual unfiltered opinions on pop culture and no-holds-barred guest interviews, but in an updated format from what she currently does on E!.
Netflix also announced that coming Friday, Oct. 10 to the internet-based network, Handler will premiere her first one-hour stand-up comedy special, which will be based on her book tour "Uganda Be Kidding Me" and will tape in Chicago on Friday, June 20.
This first special is just the beginning, as throughout 2015, Handler will create four docu-comedy specials for Netflix, as she works to gain a better understanding on things like NASCAR, Silicon Valley, the NBA draft and politics. Handler will produce the specials and new talk show with Tom Brunelle and Brad Wollack, her partners at Borderline Amazing production company.
Handler says in a statement, "If I was going to continue working in this industry, I knew I had to do something outside the box to keep myself interested. I wanted to sit with the cool kids at lunch, so I approached Netflix to make sure they were as cool as I thought they were, and when I confirmed my suspicions, like with any other future lover, I made my move. I'm more excited than I've been in awhile, and the team at Netflix is the most forward-thinking, alert group I've sat down with in ages. No offense to the 'Shahs Of Sunset.'"
Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos adds, "The internet has disrupted many of the conventions of traditional television and together with Chelsea Handler, Netflix is looking forward to reimagining the late night talk show for the on-demand generation, starting with the late night part...
"Chelsea has built a huge following on tour, on nightly TV and through her best-selling books, and we can't wait to introduce her breathtakingly honest and irreverent voice to our global membership."
