chris-pratt-guardians-of-the-galaxy-zero-dark-thirty-2013-gi.jpgChris Pratt has landed the coveted lead role in Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy."

The sci-fi action epic is part of the official Marvel Universe and will introduce a group of alien superheroes who are known to team with The Avengers in comic book mythology. Deadline broke the news Pratt will play the group's leader, Star-Lord (a.k.a. Peter Quill), a half-human half-alien hero.

It's a coup for "Parks and Recreation" star Pratt, who had not been mentioned in the leaked casting shortlists. His casting follows a futile attempt to woo Joseph Gordon-Levitt onto the project.

Signing on as a Marvel superhero also means Pratt will likely need to get back in fighting shape. He's currently on screen in the Oscar-nominated hit "Zero Dark Thirty" as a buff Navy SEAL. But he recently packed on the pounds to play a sleazy lawyer in the Vince Vaughn movie "Starbuck."

"Guardians of the Galaxy" is scheduled to be released August 1, 2014.
