Two months after filing for divorce, Christina Aguilera is opening up about the painful decision to end her marriage and why it was necessary.

"When you're unhappy in your marriage, your children are the ones who suffer," she explains in an exclusive interview with People Magazine. "That's the last thing I wanted for my son."

Aguilera separated from her husband of five years, Jordan Bratman, in September with official divorce news following in October. The couple has a two year old son, Max.

"Things were so unhealthy and unhappy for both Jordan and me, I knew I had to end it," the singer turned actress says. "I really didn't want to hurt Jordan, and I felt torn up about splitting our family up."

These days, the "Burlesque" star can be seen traipsing about with a new man-friend. She's been spotted with set assistant, Matthew Rutler, on both coasts and seems to be enjoying her newly single life.

"He's the kind of person you could spend hours with on the phone talking to and all of the sudden it's daylight," she says of her new love.

Hmmm, do we think that Mr. Rutler may have had a little something to do with Xtina's divorce?
