'Chuck' finale: Vik Sahay and Scott Krinsky discuss the final Jeffster! performance, leaving the Buy More
There will be, arguably, more important moments in the series finale of "Chuck" than the reunion of Jeffster! for one last performance. But that final song is also arguably one of the most anticipated moments of the final episode.
We know there is a Jeffster! song in Friday's (Jan. 27) finale -- we heard a bit of playback when we watched a bit of filming in December. NBC has asked to keep the tune a secret, but we can let Vik Sahay and Scott Krinsky tell you a little bit about it.
"I really feel like the criteria must be 'What's the most difficult song for Vik to sing? That's how we'll choose our music!'" Sahay says. "I mean, it's an insane song. ... But I think it's kind of a beautiful, bizarre, apt choice, and honestly ... I've gotten to a place where I relish the challenge. I'm like, 'OK, bring me the mountains, let me try to climb these things.'
"The scariest part was when I'd go to work on it, the musicians are like, 'Oh God.' They are terrified of the song, so that's not fun. But it worked out OK, I think."
Krinsky says he and Sahay usually weren't warned ahead of time about what song Jeffster! would tackle, "but then it always seems to make sense. I think they always sort of have a way of finding some great, iconic pop song. I think this one works."
Shortly before we observed the on-location filming at a concert hall in the San Fernando Valley, the "Chuck" crew had filmed its final scenes on the Buy More set, where Sahay and Krinsky spent most of their time on the show. Both say it was tough to say goodbye.
"I really choked up inside," Krinsky says. "They dimmed the lights, and we just stood around for an hour sharing stories. ... All of a sudden, all these names and these memories of, like, 'Remember when we did this?,' or 'Remember when we did that? Remember when we shot the pilot?' We were in a CompUSA in Redondo Beach. It was like, wow, we weren't even in this set. It wasn't even built yet. That was pretty hard. And I stole a sign from the Buy More."
"It was very hard to leave that set," Sahay adds. "We did a scene -- me and Scotty -- and broke down in it, and it's a really big chapter to close, and it's very, very, very emotional. You know, I've been a guy who's been a little itchy, a little edgy to try to bite into other things, and now that this is happening, it's very, very heartbreaking."
You can see Jeffster! and the Buy More one last time when "Chuck's" series finale airs at 8 p.m. ET Friday on NBC.
