Carrie Underwood brought the lighter and the darker to the red carpet at Wednesday's (June 5) 2013 CMT Music Awards.
The ever-glamorous "American Idol" alum started her chat by pointing out that it was the birthday of someone quite special to her: husband Mike Fisher, who was right at home at the show, being a Nashville Predators hockey player.
"I feel so bad," Underwood told CMT's Katie Cook. "He's stuck with me. I said, 'Would you go with me to the CMT Awards?' He knows a lot of people here on his own, though."
And if that didn't make his birthday night pleasant enough, there was the prospect of a special gift from his spouse later. Though Underwood first claimed it would be "a surprise," she then admitted, "I think he knows what it is. I'm kind of a blabbermouth."
The conversation turned serious, though, when Underwood -- a Video of the Year nominee for "Blown Away" -- spoke of the CMT Music Awards performance she was planning, with the victims of the recent tornadoes in her native Oklahoma clearly very much on her mind.
Maintaining she wasn't intending to dampen any award-show spirits, she noted that those impacted by the tragedies "still need help. It didn't just happen for a couple of days on the news. It's going to take a long time for those people to put their lives back together ... and it's important to keep it in everybody's thoughts."
