'Community' season finale: Video games, Evil Abed and a Dean-elgangers

community-digital-estate-planning-8-bit-cast-nbc.jpg "Community" ended its fourth season with a bang. Three episodes, weirdly split by "30 Rock." The first half an hour had the gang battling guest star Giancarlo Esposito, who we found out was Pierce's (Chevy Chase) brother. That battle was played as an 8-bit video game. For fans of that era of gaming, it was glorious! Pierce falling into holes and walking back and forth, NPC characters with conversation trees and the beep boops of early era games.

The best moment of the episode was Britta ( Gillian Jacobs) finding a secret passage after wanting to fix a crooked painting. Jeff ( Joel McHale) tells her not to play like a girl. It was a fairly simple episode, but it ended with Pierce being a good person! In fact, All three episodes did. Amusing, considering the whole Chevy Chase/ Dan Harmon issue.

In the second episode, the gang takes Chang ( Ken Jeong) down with an elaborate plan. One which includes a lovely veiled Mario and Luigi reference when Troy ( Donald Glover) and Abed ( Danny Pudi) dress as plumbers in mustaches. There's even a lightsaber battle. Troy sacrifices himself to the air conditioning part of the school to save the group. The Britta/Troy dynamic is adorable. They can't quite figure it out, and it's incredibly awkward, but the must hook up! Best moment of the episode was Jeff in guyliner and a vest with no shirt.

In the final half hour, Shirley ( Yvette Nicole Brown) and Pierce's sandwich shop finally gets a show. Sure, only having one person sign the contract was a bit stupid, but having Robb Corrdry back on as Jeff's rival attorney was amazing. Troy's air conditioning battle was just as engaging, which is rare for a b storyline. But the highlight of the show was Evil Abed getting therapy from Britta and trying to take everyone to the darkest timeline.

Fantastic all around, but what else would you expect from "Community?" But wait ... there is one more thing. Starburns (Dino Stamatopoulos) appeared with a wig! What was that about?
