joel-mchale-tca-gi.jpg "Community" star Joel McHale warmed up the room Monday (Aug. 1) as NBC kicked off its time at the Television Critics Association summer press tour. And as is usually the case at press tour, jokes about the state of the TV industry played pretty well, even at 9 a.m.

McHale bit the NBC hand that feeds him a little, along with joking about "The X Factor," the Emmys and more. Some of the best lines:

"We invite you to play along with the new TCA home game. It's called 'Count the Number of Times a Network Head Uses the Word "Excited" in Describing His Network's Schedule.' The winner gets a copy of the brand-new Blu-ray box set of 'The Paul Reiser Show.'"

"NBC was lagging behind in the ratings and now, thankfully, we know why. NBC has prided itself on being edgy. Young people like edgy. Young people watch NBC. It turns out, though, that young people don't watch TV when it first airs, inconsiderate punks. Now NBC knows how to capitalize on the young demo and get to be No. 1 again. We're going to wait for all the old people watching CBS and ABC to die. That's right. NBC's new slogan is changing from 'More Colorful' to 'Just one more step and you'll be at the bottom of the stairs, grandma.'"

"My show 'Community' is back.  The Chevy Chase babysitting service premieres its third season Sept. 22. And good news, once again 'Community' tied the 'Jersey Shore' in Emmy nominations. Yeah.  Eat that, 'Ghost Hunters.'"

"Great news. NFL football is finally back. I predict this will be the most exciting season of football in years. If you think about it, because of the prolonged strike, the players have had very little time to memorize the plays and get in shape. The teams will be as injured and confused as you were after the second episode of 'Perfect Couples.' That's how crazy it will be."

"Then, there's Simon Cowell's 'The X Factor.' This show is feared. It's so popular, and it features Simon's creepy nipples desperately trying to pierce his two-sizes-too-small black T-shirts. This show is bigtime. It has everyone asking, What is 'The X Factor'? What is it? Who knows? I can tell you here this morning I know what the X factor is. Paula Abdul is the X factor. Will she show up for the show? Will she slur her speech? Will she know where she is?"
