Cowboys' Josh Brent charged with death of teammate Jerry Brown
Dallas Morning News reports that an accident on the East State Highway 114 early Saturday morning claimed the life of 25-year-old Brown, who was Brent's University of Illinois teammate and friend.
Brent was allegedly driving at a high rate of speed on the service road, when he lost control of his vehicle. It hit the outside curb, flipped, and came to rest in the middle of the road. Brent was awake and talking to officers when they arrived on the scene. According to ESPN, they found Brent trying to drag Brown out of the burning car. Brown was unconscious, and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Brent failed a sobriety test on the scene.
"We are deeply saddened by the news of this accident and the passing of Jerry Brown," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says in a statement. "At this time, our hearts and prayers and deepest sympathies are with the members of Jerry's family and all of those who knew him and loved him."
While at the University of Illinois, Brent served jail time on a misdemeanor DUI charge.
