The "Designing Women" star made his first appearance on the CBS drama during Season 8 as Harrison Scott, a homeless vet after serving in Vietnam as Rossi's former Marine sergeant. Scott and Rossi then reunited in a Season 9 episode, in which Rossi helped the vet find his long-lost son.

Entertainment Weekly reports Joe Mantegna is set to direct the Season 10 Scott-centered episode, slated to air mid-season, that will bring closure to the character's storyline.

Showrunner Erica Messer tells the publication, "Joe felt he would really like to finish that story that we started. It's a huge deal for Joe, because he and Meshach were friends for over 40 years, but also for Meshach's career because the last acting thing he did was work with one of his best friends. Joe really wanted to honor the friendship and Meshach's professional life and bring closure to the story."

Taylor passed away in June at the age of 67 following a long battle with cancer.
