CW announces 2012 season premiere dates: Why do 'The Vampire Diaries,' 'Supernatural' and more start late?
In previous years, The CW has tried to premiere its series as much as two weeks before the other four broadcast networks kick off their seasons, in an attempt to get as many eyes on their new shows as possible early in the fall. This year, they're changing tactics, and instead premiering in October, when fans will already have sampled other networks' offerings and (they hope) may be ready for some fresh material.
The change effectively shortens The CW's season by close to a month, which significantly reduces the number of repeats and "hiatus" weeks during the season. Indeed, "Gossip Girl's" final season is set to run ten weeks straight, without a break other than, possibly, Thanksgiving week.
