Meet CW's 'Famous in 12' star Jameelah El-Shabazz: 'I'm willing to do just about anything to get famous'
The series follows one fame-obsessed family as they move to Los Angeles with one goal: Become famous. Cameras will follow the Artiaga family from Beaumont, Calif., for 12 weeks straight to expose just how one achieves fame in Hollywood, as well as finding out whether one family can get famous in that time, with the help of TMZ and Harvey Levin.
The series will be filmed in real time (as of now, only the first episode, airing Tuesday, June 3, has been worked on). The cameras are following the family around right now and will continue to do so through the summer. Before "Famous in 12" premieres, get to know one member of the fame-seeking family, 22-year-old daughter Jameelah El-Shabazz.
Zap2it got Jameelah on the phone to talk about the social experiment before it began to gauge how she felt about becoming famous and more.
Zap2it: "Famous in 12" certainly sounds like nothing we've ever seen on TV before.
Jameelah: It's definitely one of a kind. It's the first show that is doing a real social experiment. We are a real family who really have no idea what's going on. I see people complaining on Twitter that they're bored with TV, and here's a solution for you. We're interesting, we're eclectic and we're bound to get famous for doing something so random and you don't want to miss it.
What exactly goes into becoming famous in just 12 weeks?
That's just something you're going to have to wait to see. Because we don't even know what's going to happen either. It's truly unscripted and it's truly an experiment. We're just as nervous and excited to find that out as you!
So you have no idea what's coming, huh? Does that make you nervous about some of the things you're going to have to do?
I'm nervous to see what's going to happen but I'm not nervous to see what it is that I have to do. I'm willing to do just about anything to get famous. I want fame that badly.
What is it about fame that is so attractive to you?
Being famous can give me everything that I've ever dreamed of, both personally and professionally. Being famous, getting into the right hands, that can give me amazing opportunities as a model. I'm one of those people that thinks that I deserve it.
So what kind of modeling experience do you have?
My experience in modeling is very amateur. I've never done any campaigns or anything. I have just done beauty pageants and photo shoots for people around town. Being in Hollywood will be my very first time trying. So we'll see how that goes.
That explains why you want to be famous, but is everyone in your family on board with becoming famous?
Everybody is on board. Everyone in my family wants this.
Is anyone in your family worried about what fame might do to you guys? Being famous has a way of changing people, and not necessarily for the better all the time.
We absolutely do talk about that as a family. We all came up with a pact and we agreed that if someone has fallen off or we're concerned about someone, we're going to address it as a team and help each other. This is only going to bring us closer together, not rip us apart.
