CW orders 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Emily Owens M.D.' scripts, announces Critics Choice Awards broadcast

beauty-and-the-beast-emily-owens.jpgOn the heels of picking up "Arrow" for a full season, The CW is giving a vote of confidence to its other new fall shows, "Beauty and the Beast" and "Emily Owens M.D." The network confirms that in addition to the initial 13 episodes of each series, it has ordered three additional scripts.

Ordering additional scripts doesn't guarantee that additional episodes will be produced, but it gives the network a chance to see how subsequent episodes fare in the ratings while keeping the writers and producers on the payroll. "Emily Owens M.D." premiered last week to decent-ish ratings. "Beauty and the Beast" had a strong first episode, with a drop-off the following week -- while still maintaining solid numbers.

Zap2it spoke with "Beauty and the Beast's" Austin Basis after the order was announced. "That's always been an interesting thing, the script order," he says. "I always take everything with a grain of salt. I'm obviously hopeful, but I'll believe it when I see it! It's obviously a positive sign, this early. I definitely think, ratings-wise, it's always a week-by-week game. ... We just have to settle into a show and also settle into an audience that's going to come back every week.

Additionally, The CW announced that it will air the 18th annual Critics Choice Movie Awards on Thursday, January 10. Fans can expect a younger-skewing, more fun vibe to the show this year.

"As host of the '18th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards,' The CW gets the opportunity to throw one of the first major events of the Hollywood awards season with all of the biggest, A-list stars right here on our network," says Thom Sherman, Executive Vice President of Development at The CW. "We're working very closely with the BFCA to give this telecast a cool, current party vibe that both celebrates the year's best films and fits perfectly with our young adult brand."
