'Cymotrichous' wins 2011 Scripps National Spelling Bee for Sukanya Roy
Sukanya is an eighth grader at Abington Heights Middle School, a northern suburb of Scranton. Perhaps she is one of "Scott's tots." As the competition wore on, Sukanya traced the letters of each word on her hands, which she said increased her confidence.
And what of "cymotrichous"? It means "having waving hair" and Sukanya says she knew it right away.
"I just wanted to spell it right," Roy said. "I really didn't want to get it wrong."
Sukanya now takes home a shiny trophy, $30,000 cash prize, a $2,500 savings bond, a reference library, a $5,000 scholarship, $2,600 worth of other reference works and various other prizes.
Sukanya says she hopes to one day pursue a career in international relations. Congratulations to her.
