Cyndi Lauper looked absolutely gobsmacked as she made her way to the stage at Radio City Music Hall to collect her Tony Award for writing the music and lyrics for "Kinky Boots"

"And I can't say I wasn't practicing in front of the shower curtain for a couple of days," she says.

Lauper grew up listening to her mom's collections of Broadway soundtracks.

"I want to thank Harvey Fierstein for calling me up.

"I am so glad I was done with the dishes," she says. "And I want to thank Broadway for welcoming me. I understand how hard you work, but your hard work inspires me."

As she spoke on that enormous Radio City Music Hall stage at the live awards on CBS, she was still very much Cyndia Lauper, the talent with the odd little girl voice from Queens, wearing a Woody Woodpecker hairdo, a black lace pants ensemble and gold chandelier earrings.

"Kinky Boots" had garnered 13 nominations.
