The British driver, who has been racing since he was introduced to go-karts at age four, was a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner.

The fiery wreck occurred early Sunday. After his car flew over another car on his 13th lap, Wheldon was transported by helicopter to the nearest hospital. Other drivers were notified of his death in a meeting two hours after the crash.

The remainder of the race has been canceled. The drivers will honor him with a five-lap salute, while his number, 98, is shown at the top of the race scoreboard.
