"Dancing with the Stars" Season 17 got off to a strong start with "Pretty Little Liars" actor Brant Daugherty and professional partner Peta Murgatroyd dancing a cha-cha. After the show, we had a chance to talk to the couple about their upcoming season and to witness a little flirting.

What was it like going first? Were you really nervous?

Brant: I was pretending I wasn't, for everybody else's sake. But I was really sweating it. We had to come out right after that opening number -- and we were running around the studio and there was a costume change. It was a lot to deal with, but I'm glad we got it out of the way early. We got to ride the initial wave of energy of the crowd. I had an amazing time.

Do you think acting will help you on the show?

Brant: I've said from the start, what I have in this competition is the ability to tell a story. Peta has amazing moves and choreography and training and she's very patient with me, but I feel like we can really emote in these dances. I can really bring my skills as an actor and sell them.

Peta: Absolutely. I'm so glad that I have an actor this season. On top of that, being a beautiful person in life -- respectful and just amazing to work with in the studio. I think he can really sell a story, and I think together that's going to be our biggest thing.

Who is the celebrity to beat this season?

Brant: Did you watch Amber Riley tonight? Wow! From the second she started moving, the crowd just erupted. She was electrifying and she's going to be really tough to beat this year. I think we can do it!

Peta: I think we can do it, yeah!

Who is, in your opinion, the hottest female dancer this season?

Brant: I'm going to have to say Peta Murgatroyd.

Peta: And if you didn't, I'm going to be pretty pissed.

Brant: [ laughing] I could feel your energy as soon as she asked that question.

Peta: I'm joking, I'm joking.

What are your goals for the season as a whole?

Brant: My only goal is to put on the best show that we can. I know the audience will be there with us if we keep them entertained, keep them guessing. Just to do the best we can is really going to help me grow as a performer.

What's coming up next?

Brant: We have one more week before we do our rumba. And we have a lot of work to do. We never take a day off here!
