'Dancing with the Stars': David Hasselhoff, a reluctant last minute addition

david-hasselhoff-dancing-with-the-stars-interview.jpg Bristol Palin and Kyle Massey aside, David Hasselhoff might be "Dancing with the Stars'" biggest surprise for Season 11. And for good reason. He was was a last minute substitute -- though he's not saying for whom.

Zap2it caught up with the "Knight Rider" star, recent roast-ee and German national treasure at the August 30 "DWTS" cast reveal event where he shared apprehensions about joining the show and explained why now is the perfect time to take the plunge.

"After I got the call, I told my daughters, 'It looks like somebody fell out and they want me to do the show,'" says Hasselhoff, who, with a tour, reality series ("The Hasselhoffs"), and film ("Dancing Ninja") on deck, wanted to decline.

"This stuff is painful. I've done Broadway, I've done the West End with 40 of the top dancers in the world behind me and I was in such pain. Watching this show, I'd turn it on and say, 'No, never.'"

Never ended up being a bit unrealistic. Hasselhoff says he caved just two days before the announcement, citing his daughters' insistence and a new confidence in his physical state as rationale for coming on board.

"I'm in pretty good shape right now because I've been working out out with my daughter," he explains, referring to Hayley, star of ABC Family's "Huge." "She was training, trying to get in shape for the series, and turned me on to these boot camps she was doing. [Now] my stamina is up, but my knees are still a mess and I'm falling apart. I'm 58."

But only one day into rehearsals, he's still in one piece -- and surprised by the company of his new cast. "The feeling around here is a lot different than I expected," he says. "It's a great, warm, humble group of people that are really nice."

Let's revisit that once they've gotten an eyeful of the magical mirrrorball trophy.
