'Dancing With the Stars': Jennifer Grey has 'dancing in her blood'
But that wasn't enough for the audience. They were so worked up over Grey's performance, they booed when the judges didn't hand out a single 9.
Zap2it caught up with Grey and partner Derek Hough after the broadcast, and, for Hough, there's a clear reason why she's connecting with fans of the show.
"She's not a trained dancer, but she has it in her blood," says Hough. "That's what you're seeing out there. She has the ability, but now that I'm working with her, she's training, honing it in and doing a fantastic job. I love dancing with her."
A two-time "DWTS" champ, Derek has probably loved dancing with a lot of his partners, but it's something he doesn't take for granted. "I've been very fortunate with my partners, but I've also taken advantage of that," Hough says. "People in the past have gotten great partners but have messed it up."
He won't be making that mistake with Grey, who took week two on as a completely new challenge -- despite the potentially ego-inflating praise she got with her waltz. "It's a totally different flavor this week," Grey tells Zap2it. "I was over the initial jitters, and I was a little more jazzed about it."
But also, admittedly, scared -- but only because of the speed and difficulty, which anyone who caught the dance definitely noticed left her reluctant to get off the floor. That's probably one reason why the audience wanted a higher score from her. And though Grey and Hough might be flattered, they're happy with what they got.
"It takes the pressure off of us," says Hough. "If we got 9s, we'd be like 'Yeah... crap.'"
"I don't want to have to go down from anything," Grey adds. "I want to build. I like it like this. Slow and steady wins the race."
Well, maybe not slow. Let's check out the footwork on that jive again:
