'Dancing With the Stars': Nancy O'Dell not surprised at Jennifer Grey's win
O'Dell was set to be a contestant on Season 8 of "Dancing" in the spring of 2009. But she blew out her knee less than a week before the season started and had to drop out.
"I love the show," O'Dell tells Zap2it. "I've always been a fan, and the time when I was going to compete on it was just great. It was disappointing, because I had rehearsed for three and a half weeks before I shredded the meniscus in my knee, which wound up requiring surgery. It was very frustrating for that to happen literally half a week before the show was to debut."
O'Dell's partner would have been Tony Dovolani, and she was pulling for him and Audrina Patridge this season. "I'm always pulling for Tony, because he was my partner," O'Dell says, "but I know he and Audrina got voted off. She was a really good dancer, I thought ... but Jennifer [Grey] was great from the beginning, so I kind of suspected she would pull it off."
The former "Access Hollywood" co-host is set to replace Mary Hart on "Entertainment Tonight" next season, and her new job is what caused her to miss attending Tuesday's (Nov. 23) "Dancing" finale. She had a dinner meeting with "ET" staffers.
O'Dell is hosting FOX's "New Year's Eve Live" in December, and she'll also co-host the competition series "Your Own Show" on Oprah Winfrey's OWN when it launches in January.
And as for the possibility of another go at "Dancing With the Stars"?
"I could go back and do it, but I'd be a little afraid that something would happen and I'd have to pull out for a second time, which would be quite embarrassing," she says. "That might prevent me a little bit from trying, plus with the new gig, I don't know if I would have the time to be able to do it."
