Matt Reeves ("Cloverfield") will direct the follow-up to 2011's blockbuster hit, "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," which was helmed by Rupert Wyatt ("The Equalizer"). Reeves directed Russell in what was perhaps her best know role on TV's "Felicity."

Variety broke the news of Russell's casting, but there are no details available yet about her character.

The film itself will be set a decade after its predecessor, as scientists in San Francisco struggle against a plague that threatens to wipe out humanity as Caesar attempts to hold on to dominance over his intelligent ape community.

The release date for Fox's "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" is May 23, 2014. Russell can currently be seen in Dimension's "Dark Skies."
