Debra Messing returns to NBC with 'Mysteries of Laura' pilot

Messing, a season removed from "Smash," will play the title character in the show, and her involvement lifts a cast contingency on the pilot. The former "Will & Grace" star will play a homicide detective with a messy home life, where she's raising twins.

Jeff Rake ("The Tomorrow People," "Miss Match") is writing the pilot, which is based on a Spanish series. Rake will also executive produce with "Tomorrow People" and "Arrow" EP Greg Berlanti.

Messing is currently starring in "Oustide Mullingar" on Broadway and will film "The Mysteries of Laura" once the play's run ends in mid-March. The pilot will film in New York.
