'Desperate Housewives' Doug Savant is 'very confident that we're coming back'

Times are very different for "Desperate Housewives" this season as it approaches Sunday's (May 15) two-hour Season 7 finale with no official word on whether it's returning next season.

Reports in April stated that the last holdouts among the "Housewives" stars to sign on for next season were close to finalizing their deal, which would be followed soon after by an official announcement from ABC. Yet, that announcement has yet to come.

"Desperate" husband, James Denton, had previously said the negotiations had become more complicated than expected and that the men hadn't even been approached pending the women's negotiations. That seems to have changed.

"Yes, we've been approached," Doug Savant, who plays Tom Scavo, tells Zap2it. "Here's the thing. I feel very confident. There's no official announcement. We're not officially picked up. Upfronts are coming up, so we should know something by the middle of the month."

"For a seven year old series," Savant continues. "We're still one of the top 10 scripted shows in all of television. We're in the top 20 shows across all genres, scripted and unscripted. So, we are -- and I say this humbly -- I'm grateful that we're still one of the most exceptional shows in all of television."

Industry-wide there's very little doubt that the show will return for another season, but the negotiations have really kept the attention of the media and fans. Creator Marc Cherry will have less of a presence on the show next season, so he can work on his new pilots. And the women are reportedly only signing for one year at time at this point with an option to renew with a salary bump if the program goes on for a second year after that.

Savant, though, tells us that the show is in a great position to continue, "I'm very confident that we're coming back and we're going to have another season and I hope many more to come. As long as the audience is there and there's still a passionate fan base -- and we certainly have that -- 'Desperate Housewives' will still be on the air."

Zappers, how many seasons do you think the series has left in it?
