"Good Luck Charlie" and "Lemonade Mouth" star Bridgit Mendler is already a very busy 18-year-old. But when Radio Disney called and asked her to present a check to one of her favorite charities as part of its "Radio Disney Gives Back" initiative, she made time.
Mendler had the opportunity to co-present a donation with a lucky Radio Disney winner to the charity of her choice and the star picked the First Book charity.
"I think learning starts with a love of reading," Mendler tells Zap2it. "For me, finding that love of reading was so important. I was so thrilled to become part of the charity and be able to meet a contest winner and give a check for $10,000 to the First Book charity. I was very happy to be a part of it."
First Book provides new books and educational resources to programs and schools serving children from low-income families throughout the United States and Canada.
"The thing that I loved about First Book was that it focused on education and especially it focuses on children who don't have easy access to it," Mendler explains.
"The most important thing is making education accessible to the next generation," she continues. "Because they're the people who will be running the world soon. So, they need the tools to do that. I think it's very important that we not overlook the people who don't have much of an access to it."
Giving back to charity is serious business to Mendler, but that doesn't mean she can't have fun with it.
"The contest winner's family were all really, really sweet," she tells us. "The little boy kept trying to hold up this giant check. He kept trying to hold it up all on his own and he was such a trooper. He really took care of it. There were a really sweet family. It was awesome to meet them and share in the happiness of doing something good for this charity."
That's not it for Mendler's charity work. Disney Channel just announced that she's performing the anthem for its "Disney Friends for Change Games." The pop/rock anthem releases on June 10 and benefits environmental charities through Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund.
"Disney Friends for Change Games" begins on June 24 and aims to donate almost $1 million to environmental charities. More than 30 Disney Channel and Disney XD stars will compete in challenges inspired by everyday "green" acts on behalf of four environmental charities -- Fauna and Flora International, World Wildlife Fund, Ocean Conservancy and UNICEF.
