Disney-princess.jpgIt's really a wonder Disney hasn't done this before, considering the vast amount of money they make selling very tiny sizes of their princess costumes. They've just announced a new series and movie for Disney Junior and the Disney Channel. "Sofia the First," is their youngest princess yet. All their other princesses are adults or teens. This one is a little girl who starts off life in the usual way. Everything changes when her mom marries the king. She lands in a castle with fancy clothes, a step-brother and step-sister and animal friends. Of course.

For those of you out there with the legitimate worry that this is just another princess who'll need to find her prince to make her happy, a bad message for little girls, Disney wants to reassure you. In announcing the series, Nancy Kanter, Senior Vice President, Original Programming and General Manager, Disney Junior Worldwide, said, "In Sofia, we have a 'peer to peer princess,' a relatable girl experiencing the same social issues as our young viewers - learning how to fit in, making new friends, conquering new skills and building sibling relationships."

She continued, "Although Sofia will have plenty of pretty dresses and sparkly shoes, our stories will show Sofia, and our viewers, that what makes a real princess is what's inside, not what's outside. That the inner character of kindness, generosity, loyalty, honesty and grace make you special, not the dress you wear."

Sofia will be voiced by Ariel Winter from "Modern Family." Also providing voices are Tim Gunn, Sara Ramirez and Wayne Brady.
