'Divergent' adds Mekhi Phifer, Ray Stevenson to cast, officially starts production

divergent-book-cover.jpgBuzzy young adult novel adaptation "Divergent" has officially begun principal photography in Chicago and added Mekhi Phifer ("ER") and Ray Stevenson ("Rome," "Dexter") to its already impressive cast.

Summit Entertainment made the announcement today in its latest move to hype what the studio hopes will be the next "Hunger Games" / "Twilight"-sized sensation. "Divergent" is scheduled for theatrical release on March 21, 2014, or what the studio calls "'The Hunger Games' slot."

Shailene Woodley ("The Descendants"), Theo James ("Golden Boy") and Oscar winner Kate Winslet lead the cast which also includes "Nikita" star Maggie Q, Jai Courtney, Miles Teller, Zoe Kravitz, Ansel Elgort, Ben Lloyd-Hughes, Ben Lamb, Christian Madsen and Amy Newbold.

Neil Burger ("Limitless") is directing from a script by Vanessa Taylor ("Game of Thrones," "Hope Springs").

The story follows young heroine Tris Prior (Woodley) who uncovers a vast conspiracy in a futuristic world where people are divided into factions based on personality.
