The pieces of the puzzle "Doctor Who" 50th anniversary have come together with a new webisode that serves as a prequel to "The Day of the Doctor." For the first time since the 1996 "Doctor Who" TV movie, Paul McGann returns as the eighth Doctor, depicting his final adventure in "The Night of the Doctor."

The short takes place during the Time War, as the Doctor tries to help a female pilot escape a crashing ship. When she realizes he is a Time Lord, she refuses to go with him and they both die as the ship crashes into the planet Karn.

The Doctor is revived, however. He is given four minutes to live, during which time he accepts that he must become part of the Time War, drinking some kind of potion that will help him return a warrior after regeneration.

After the process is complete, the image of a young John Hurt is seen reflecting off a surface as he says, "Doctor, no more." There's the introduction of Hurt's War Doctor in the 50th anniversary special.

What a treat on a Thursday morning, coincidentally also McGann's 54th birthday.

"The Day of the Doctor" airs November 23 on BBC America.
