matt-smith-doctor-who-premiere-gi.jpgRyan Gosling is firming up the cast for his directorial debut, "How to Catch a Monster," adding "Doctor Who" star Matt Smith as the male lead and off screen girlfriend Eva Mendes in a supporting role.

"Mad Men's" Christina Hendricks is already set to star in the fantasy thriller as a single mother whose teenage son discovers an underwater town.

Variety broke the news of Smith's casting but did not specify what his role will entail, or whether or not Gosling is a Whovian.

Mendes' casting as a "prominent figure of the Big Bad Wolf Club" was first reported by Bloody Disgusting.

Gosling also wrote the "Monster" script and is expected to begin production in the spring.

Gosling and Mendes will soon be seen together on screen in the dramatic thriller "The Place Beyond the Pines," opening March 29, also starring Bradley Cooper, Dane DeHaan and Rose Byrne.
