'Downton Abbey': Maggie Smith says Lady Violet's 'gotta drop down dead at some point'Add to Favorites | Downton Abbey
"Downton Abbey" has recently taken to killing off its main characters. Two actors, Dan Stevens and Jessica Brown Findlay, departed the show during its third season and that was how the show chose to write them out.
Now Dame Maggie Smith says she anticipates that one day, they'll kill off Lady Violet, the Dowager Countess of Grantham.
"She's gotta drop down dead at some point. I've got to be about 110, logically, in the thing. I don't know what's going to happen," says Smith, in an interview with "Today."
She is right -- the show began with the Titanic sinking in 1912 and is now in the roaring '20s, so Lady Violet is getting right up there in age.
"I've had quite enough of Violet, I should say," adds Smith. "I'm only kidding," she laughs.
Smith also addresses the rise of plastic surgery among stars, saying, "I kind of missed out on all that. If I'd started earlier, doing all that ... I truly think if I went to Los Angeles, I'd frighten people. They don't see old people."
We feel like hanging out with Maggie Smith would be a general hoot, and we sincerely hope they do not kill off Lady Violet anytime soon.
"Downton Abbey" returns to U.S. airwaves in January 2014.
