Dr. Phil deletes tweet questioning sex with drunk girl after Twitter outrage

Dr. Phil McGraw learned a valuable lesson in social media Tuesday (August 20). Never give the people on Twitter an easy setup to ridicule you. The talk show host sent out, then quickly deleted, a tweet reading, "If a girl is drunk, is it OK to have sex with her? Reply yes or no to @drphil #teensaccused"

It didn't take long for the internet to respond. Replies were all over the map, from making jokes to genuine outrage that McGraw would question such a thing. After Dr. Phil deleted the tweet, a spokesperson for his show gave a statement to Buzzfeed. "This tweet was intended to evoke discussion leading into a very serious show topic. It was not intended to be taken lightly. It's based upon a recent news story, hence the #teensaccused label."

This was probably not the type of discussion the show was looking to evoke. You can see a large collection of responses to Dr. Phil at Storify (Warning: some of the language used is pretty strong). One of the more lighthearted replies comes from comedian Rob Delaney asking, "Aren't you married?" Andrew Levy, who appears on Fox News, had his own bit of fun, writing "Are you 'asking for a friend'?"
