'Dumb and Dumber To' vs. 'The Newsroom' Season 3: Jeff Daniels jokes Harry may show up on HBO

Jeff Daniels wouldn't mind being "Dumber" and smarter simultaneously. "The Newsroom" star has signed to reunite with Jim Carrey and filmmakers Peter and Bobby Farrelly for "Dumb and Dumber To." The movie comedy sequel will take not-so-Mensa men Lloyd and Harry on another cross-country trek -- and if it hits theaters next summer, it could coincide with a "Newsroom" Season 3.

"It's the perfect time to do it," Daniels tells Zap2it. "Imagine the mental gymnastics I'm going to have to perform to pull that off, to go from Will to Harry, then back to Will if there's a Season 3. It's an actor's dream.

"I hope two things," adds Daniels. "I hope that when people see 'The Newsroom' and 'Dumb and Dumber To," they don't see Will in Harry or Harry in Will. Second, I'm terrified that I'll get into 'The Newsroom' and Harry will suddenly appear in the middle of a newscast."

Though he's joking about that, Daniels maintains it's not impossible: "I've actually entertained the ('Newsroom') crew by doing that. In Season 1, I wondered if Harry could actually read (a newscast): 'Hello! We have news!'"

If indeed the two projects end up on view at the same time next year, Daniels reasons, "It could be a very exciting time ... or a very black hole for America. I remember when the first 'Dumb & Dumber' came out, I think it was The New York Times that criticized us for 'the dumbing-down of America.' They just tried to set fire to us.

"Maybe it'll just confuse everyone," Daniels muses of possibly being seen in both roles at once. "'How can he do that and also do this?' That's part of the fun."

'The Newsroom' Season 2 premieres July 14 on HBO.
