Dunder Mifflin paper products now available outside 'The Office'
The DM packages will feature such quips from the show as "Our motto is, 'Quabity First'" and "Get Your Scrant On."
Sergio Pereira, Quill's chief marketing office, says this new marketing strategy is an effort to fight against the "race to the bottom in the paper business."
Not only is the fictional Dunder Mifflin struggling in the ever-increasing paperless world, but real world paper companies are as well. Sales have been declining about 3% per year in recent years.
Quill is hoping this "reverse product placement" will help them by bringing a brand to consumers that is already part of popular culture. The WSJ cites other examples of this reverse product placement as things like Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans from Harry Potter or Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. restaurants from "Forrest Gump."
The Quill/NBC partnership will see NBC Universal receiving 6% of the revenue from the paper sales under a two-year licensing agreement that can be extended if it proves successful.
We have to wonder - maybe they should've thought of this when "The Office" was in its heyday and not the season after its star Steve Carell left. And in case you were wondering, a carton of Dunder Mifflin copy paper is currently $34.99 on the Quill website.
