Dustin Hoffman tries his 'Luck' at HBO
Hoffman will star in the show as a gambler who, after being released from prison, returns to a horse track he used to frequent, the showbiz trade papers report. He joins Dennis Farina, who will play the lead character's right-hand man and driver, and John Ortiz, who's playing a horse trainer, in the cast.
HBO is hoping to shoot the pilot in the spring; if it's picked up to series, it would likely be on the air in early 2011.
Hoffman won an Emmy in 1985 for playing Willy Loman in a CBS adaptation of "Death of a Salesman" and guested on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" in 2005, but he hasn't done any regular TV work since the late 1960s, shortly after his breakout role in "The Graduate."
He won Oscars in 1980 for "Kramer vs. Kramer" and 1989 for "Rain Man" and has been nominated five other times. His recent movie credits include "Last Chance Harvey," "Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium" and "Stranger than Fiction," along with voice work in "Kung Fu Panda."
