'Elementary' Season 2 premiere: Holmes sees Lestrade, brother Mycroft while on 'Step Nine' in London
The case of the week is tied to Inspector Lestrade, a character from the Holmes novels who, in this iteration, reveled in the fame he received by working alongside Holmes at Scotland Yard and ended up spiraling a bit out of control.
A case where Lestrade accused the son of a high-powered newspaper owner of murdering his wife is what was finally he downfall and now Holmes rides to the rescue, partially out of a sense of obligation and guilt for not helping control Lestrade when the fame was going to his head.
Naturally, Holmes and Watson prove that the man did kill his wife, thereby vindicating Lestrade -- but, like any addict who has not sought help yet, Lestrade is back in the limelight, reveling in his drug of choice.
Meanwhile, Sherlock's older brother Mycroft is living in Holmes' old apartment and makes an overture towards Watson. But it is not romantic -- he wants Joan's help in figuring out how to be friends with Sherlock, because Mycroft is sick and may not have much longer.
Mycroft makes some inroads with his brother in a way that only Sherlock would appreciate and they part on, well, better terms.
Thoughts & Tidbits
- The Sherlock/Watson dynamic is just as good as it always was. We missed them over the summer and can't wait to see them back at work with Gregson in NYC.
- However, that doesn't mean we want Mycroft to be a one-off. We hope that since the show has established his storyline, with the illness and wanting to repair his relationship with his brother, that we see him again.
- Love the appearance of 221b Baker Street!
- Our favorite lines:
Holmes: "I'm not slipping, I've just grown more courteous."
Holmes: "221b is a good deal more than nice, Watson. I spent the best part of 10 years transforming it into a virtual womb of creativity. Stepping inside it is not unlike stepping inside my very brain. You will no doubt see things that will confuse or even upset you."
Holmes: "I've been betrayed."
Joan: "What do you expect from a guy named Geezer Bob?"
