EMAs 2013: Miley Cyrus joint smoking investigated by Dutch - but not for the reason you think
Tjitte Mastenbroek of the National Food and Consumer Authority (NVWA) tells the AFP, "We received complaints about smoking which was also seen on television. We have to investigate. We will shortly be meeting the Ziggo Dome's management to check what exactly happened there."
The incident, where Cyrus appeared to take a marijuana cigarette out of her handbag and light up during the live show, was cut by MTV when it broadcast the EMAs in the United States. Cyrus is not being investigated so much for the marijuana but for lighting up in a smoke-free venue -- possession of less than five grams of marijuana has been decriminalized in the Netherlands since 1976.
"There is a smoking ban in public places in the Netherlands," says Mastenbroek. "Employees have the right to a smoke-free environment and this includes camera and sound personnel. After meeting the Ziggo Dome's management, we will decide whether possible steps will be taken."
Ziggo Dome spokesman Danni Damman says that Cyrus lighting up "caught [them] by surprise. It's not easy to interfere in a moment like that."
Next year's Europe Music Awards will be held in Glasgow, Scotland.
