Facebook hashtags being introduced - 'Game of Thrones' Red Wedding and Oscars to blameAdd to Favorites | Game of Thrones
Facebook hashtags have become a part of the social networking site. The use of a hashtag to tag topics has long been a part of social networks like Twitter and Instagram, and now Facebook is getting in on the trend as well.
With the ability to connect a user's Twitter account to their Facebook feed, many hashtagged comments have started appearing on Facebook prior to this change. Now, the company announced in a blog post, those hashtags will be clickable to "help people more easily discover what others are saying about a specific topic and participate in public conversations."
"We'll continue to roll out more features in the coming weeks and months, including trending hashtags and deeper insights, that help people discover more of the world's conversations," Facebook says in the post, directing users to the Help Center to get more information.
Interestingly enough, Facebook credits global conversations relating to the Oscars and even the Red Wedding episode of "Game of Thrones" as what prompted them to create "a simple way to see the larger view of what's happening or what people are talking about." So for those of you (like us) who couldn't resist contributing to the 1.5 million mentions of the Red Wedding on June 2, we have no one to recognize for this new Facebook feature but ourselves.
