You know the United States has joined in the world's 2014 FIFA World Cup insanity when Waffle House gets in on the game. But that's exactly what has happened now that the restaurant chain has officially banned Belgian waffles from its menus.

The news first appeared in a release published by TMZ. "We support a boycott on Belgian Waffles," a representative for the restaurant chain says. "We support America. We don't support Belgian Waffles."

Twitter got in on the action a short time later:

The key to this entire boycott is that Waffle House does not actually sell Belgian waffles -- the restaurants instead serve "American" waffles with a smaller grid pattern. Thus, not only does the boycott proclaim patriotism, it also serves the bottom line.

With the Belgium-United States World Cup game scheduled to be played Tuesday (July 1) at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT, at least the ban on tasty Belgian waffles doesn't need to last too long.
