Fox Mole Joe Muto only cost Gawker $5,000

fox-mole-joe-muto-gawker2.jpgDisgruntled former Fox News Channel employee Joe Muto, aka "The Fox Mole," outed himself on Gawker Tuesday (April 10) after Fox News pinpointed him as the intel-providing culprit. But you've got to think he was at least making bank for committing career suicide in such a fashion, right? Well, you'd be wrong. Because according to Forbes, gossip site Gawker paid Muto just $5,000 for blog posts about his employer.

Perhaps one of the most embarrassing parts of the low price of Muto's career is that he didn't even reveal anything that juicy in his anonymous posts, writing about bathroom renovations and how the network stretched one interview with Mitt Romney into two nights of news.

It took the network less than 24 hours to ferret out the Fox Mole, who had been with Fox News since 2004. He was initially suspended with pay and then fired.

"Joe Muto has already been fired," a Fox News Channel spokesperson says. "Once the network determined that Mr. Muto was the main culprit in less than 24 hours, he was suspended late yesterday while we pursued concurrent avenues. We are continuing to explore legal recourse against Mr. Muto and possibly others."
