Friday box office is 'Despicable'
"Despicable Me," the animated comedy starring the voice of Steve Carell, took the box-office lead on Friday (July 9) with an estimated $21.7 million on its opening day. That pushed "Eclipse," which made $11 million, down to second place.
Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the "Twilight" movies, can take comfort in the fact that "Eclipse" has already passed the $200 million mark in the United States and has pulled in another $100 million worldwide. That's a little behind "New Moon's" pace but hardly anything to sneeze at.
The $21.7 million for "Despicable Me" puts it on pace to earn in the neighborhood of $50 million to $60 million for the weekend, well ahead of forecasts that pegged it around $40 million. The weekend's other wide release, "Predators," came in third on Friday with a respectable $10.5 million.
"Toy Story 3" ($6.7 million) and "The Last Airbender" ($5.3 million) completed the top five on Friday.
