fnl-emmy-reaction.jpgThe series finale of "Friday Night Lights" airs on NBC Friday (July 15) -- after already having aired on DirecTV in February. So is the show getting its first nomination for outstanding drama series at the Emmys at all bittersweet?

"No -- it's sweet," executive producer Jason Katims tells Zap2it. "It's taken a long time to get that kind of recognition, but we've had such great acknowledgment all along from the passionate fans of the show and the passion so many critics have had, and as far as I feel, that's kept us going. So to have this acknowledgment now is really just a great way to send the show off. It's unexpected, and it's really thrilling."

The series received its first nomination for best drama, and leads Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler each earned their second nomination. Katims was also nominated for outstanding writing for a drama, for the series finale, "Always." He was asleep when the nominations were announced shortly after 5:30 a.m. Pacific time, so his wife delivered the news.

"She happened to be listening to NPR and heard it," Katims says. "She woke me up and said, 'You might want to know this.'"

Katims is also preparing to begin filming on his other NBC series, "Parenthood" -- production on the third season starts next week. That work is taking a backseat to the "Friday Night Lights" news today, though.

"You kind of write off the day, or at least the morning," he says. "Eventually I'll be able to focus a little bit, but yeah -- in five years of the show, this hasn't [happened]. Kyle and Connie were nominated last year, which was fantastic, but the show getting acknowledged like this is something we haven't had. I think it's appropriate to take a few hours and just enjoy it."

The 90-minute "FNL" finale airs at 8 p.m. ET Friday on NBC. The Emmys will be broadcast Sept. 18 on FOX.
