FX's 'Powers' pilot packs a (Lucy) Punch

lucy-punch-powers-gi.jpgFX's comic book-inspired pilot "Powers" has cast its female lead.

Lucy Punch ("Hot Fuzz," "The Class") will play Deena Pilgrim, a homicide detective who works on cases involving people with superpowers, Deadline reports. In the opening of the comic series by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, Deena is a new transfer to the Powers division, where she's partnered with Christian Walker, a former hero who lost his powers.

Katee Sackhoff had campaigned for the part of Deena, but to no avail. British actress Punch is mostly known for comedy -- her credits also include "Bad Teacher" and "Dinner for Schmucks" -- but that background could serve her pretty well as Deena, who in the comics doesn't have much of a filter.

The Walker role hasn't been cast yet. Reports earlier this year said FX was courting "Friday Night Lights" star Kyle Chandler for the part, but we haven't heard much since then.

Charles H. Eglee ("The Shield," "The Walking Dead") is writing the pilot script and executive producing with Bendis, director Michael Dinner and David Engel. The pilot is scheduled to film later this summer in Chicago.
