'Game of Thrones' casts Pedro Pascal as the Red Viper: Who is Oberyn Martell?Add to Favorites | Game of Thrones
The most exciting new character addition to "Game of Thrones" has finally been cast. It's being reported that "Graceland" actor Pedro Pascal is tapped to play the role of Oberyn Martell.
Entertainment Weekly broke the news about the Season 4 casting. Oberyn Martell is a fan-favorite character who is known best by his nickname, the Red Viper.
Zap2it previously teased the introduction of the Martell family in Season 4. Hailing from the southern area of Westeros known as Dorne (recognized worldwide for its production of fantastic wine), the Martells become significant players in the game of thrones as the series progresses.
Though "Game of Thrones" fans haven't met a Martell face-to-face before, they have heard of at least one. Elia Targaryen, the wife of Rhaegar Targaryen (Daenerys' older brother) who was murdered during Robert Baratheon's rebellion, was a Martell before she married the then-prince of Westeros. Elia was killed by Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane on the orders of the Lannisters, and minor spoilers Oberyn Martell is finally ready to get his revenge.
"This was a tough one," showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss tell EW about the casting. "The Red Viper is sexy and charming, yet believably dangerous; intensely likable, yet driven by hate. The boys love him, the girls love him, and he loves them all back. Unless your last name is Lannister. We found a fellow who can handle the job description and make it seem effortless. He wasn't easy to find and he won't be easy to stop."
The Red Viper isn't the only new character who will be introduced in Season 4. Author George R.R. Martin previously confirmed that wildling leader Styr the Magnar of Thenn and Margaery Tyrell's father Mace Tyrell will also be cast, while rumor has it that Oberyn's paramour Ellaria Sand is going to be introduced as well. "Game of Thrones" returns to HBO in Spring 2014, and is expected to have a presence at San Diego Comic-Con.
