During an appearance on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," country music superstar Garth Brooks opened up about his relationship with current wife Trisha Yearwood and the interesting timeline it occurred on, most of which was during his first marriage.
Garth and Trisha first met in 1987, 13 months after Brooks married his college sweetheart, Sandy Mahl. On their meeting, Garth says, "I felt that feeling like when you just meet your wife." Still, Brooks says he was committed to making his marriage to Sandy work.
"Being married, it's gotta be right. This is who you went to college with and you were married in front of God and your family and everybody." Still, at the end of the day, "There comes that time where you're looking at the rest of your life and going, 'How do you want to live it?'" he says.
He and Sandy divorced in 2000, with Brooks and Yearwood tying the knot in 2005. Garth says they started seeing each other in a romantic context after his marriage had ended. That change allowed him to see her in a new light, as Brooks explains, "If you like her and don't know her, you're going to love her. If you love her and don't know her, you're going to worship her."
Now, with his last of three children finishing up high school, Garth says he's never been happier. "I never knew it could be like this," he says with a smile. "I never knew that every day you could feel like this."
